Food + Sex = Us
From our friend Mark Andrew Gravel, who is on tour with this project:
Food + Sex is a collage art food magazine exploring how desire shapes the food environment. By weaving erotic, shocking and thoughtful layers of beauty, wildness and the human spirit, we peer into the fire of hope and fear to find the hidden, seek the cosmic and reflect on the elemental connectedness in life that opens us to new ways of being. Included in its pages are a visual patchwork of uncommon art, essays and excerpts by thinkers, makers and doers from the food underground and beyond.
Find current and upcoming issues available for purchase at www.foodandsex.us.
Mark will be exhibiting and selling the work at the street foodie Eat Real Festival this weekend in Oakland, as well in as New York and the Carolinas later in the Fall. Here is a review from the SFWeekly that entices us a little more.

Recently I’ve been inspired by the work of Alta Buden who creates really cool paintings and paper cutouts that incorporate nature with pop culture icons and technology. She studied both art and science at the University of Chicago so she has a really cool take on things. Here’s her website: http://altabuden.com

For those of you who like the Steam Punk style, this San Francisco artist is the bomb. She designs and makes all her material. I love looking at the pictures and especially reading her descriptions!

Eric Drooker is by far one of the most inspiring artists to me. His art is unique and usually has a social commentary aspect to it. I first ran into him from his cover illustration on the book “Nowtopia” by Chris Carlsson.

First discovered Roxy Paine’s art in my local park in New York. Not only does he have the sexiest name, his scupltures and installations seem more like a shocking, heightened version of nature than a man-made construction. Plus, you can now see his “Maelstrom” on the roof of the Met! http://www.jamescohan.com/artists/roxy-paine/

http://milkattack.livejournal.com has fascinated me for years with the art in her journal. it’s colorful, yet full of some surrealistic realism that i can’t quite put into words effectively.

I love Christine Alcino’s work. Her images are accessible and ethereal at the same time. Her use of strong bold color contrasts well with her playful use of focus. I also appreciate that she can retain her expressive, colorful style in her work for clients. Her work with shadows and hints of stories let’s the viewer fill in the blanks for themselves. Brain candy.

Here’s a lovely local doing great things in sculpture in the Greensboro area. She also teaches at a Friends school.
