HOMEGROWN income – pieces of self-sufficiency

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

While we would love to spend all of our time growing, brewing, canning and cooking, we’ve gotta make a living, too. Of course, we get a lot of mileage from our dollars by living HOMEGROWN… What better deal is there than going from pennies-per-seed to pounds of fresh, nutritious food?

At the risk of stating the obvious, the jobs and economy pictures are not pretty ones right now. Here are some excellent examples of good ole American ingenuity and resourcefulness – folks who are living HOMEGROWN and gleaning a little bit of money from their efforts.

Our industrious little friend the worm provides not only a steady stream of castings, but also a pretty healthy stream of income. Wendy and Mikey are selling Red Wigglers out of their Holy Scrap Hot Springs homestead. If you’ve got a pile, you can, too!

Our beloved Etsy has become a full-time outlet for crafters, sewers and makers to sell adorable things like this and these and these (gah – cute!).

Foodzie is an artisan food seller’s version of Etsy. The Local Harvest marketplace has been around for a long time and, consensus is, does it better. Farmers and hobbyists sell everything from Hot Pickled Eggs to Turbo Poo to Honey and Bee Products.

Behemoth online marketplaces like Amazon and Ebay are a lifeline for “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” home-based businesses. From books and records to clothing and toys, people are supplementing, and sometimes making, a living by selling online.
